Guide: How to choose the right income protection
Last verified .
1. Find your income gap first
The unemployment benefits is up to a maximum of DKK 22,041/month before tax in 2026 (26,198 DKK in the first 3 months if you meet the conditions). The unemployment benefits will hit the ceiling at a gross wage of approx. DKK 26,600. If you earn more, the difference between 80-90% of your wage and the unemployment benefits will be covered by an income protection. Calculate your income gap →
2. Check if you are already covered
If you are a member of HK, BUPL, Socialpædagogerne, TL, Frie (unemployment insurance fund + Trade Union) or - from 1 January 2027 - Dansk Metal, you already have a collective income protection. It typically covers 80% for a maximum of 6 months. See trade unions' schemes →
3. Maximum coverage in DKK
The providers have very different ceilings on additional allowances: from DKK 3,500/month (BUPL) and DKK 7,500/month (A&TIL Base, Frie Gratis) to DKK 40,000 (Djøf, Topdanmark, AKA, Det Faglige Hus), DKK 45,000 (CA) and DKK 60,000 (IDA, Lederne, A&TIL Flex).
4. Qualifying period
The time from purchase until you are covered: 5 months (Frie), 6 months (e.g. Ase, CA, Krifa, Det Faglige Hus, Lederne, GF) or 9 months (e.g. Djøf, IDA, Topdanmark, MA, Alka products). Therefore, buy while your job is safe - you cannot buy when you know of a future termination.
5. Waiting period
Number of days from unemployment to payment: from 0 days (optional with Det Faglige Hus, GF and Alka / Min A-kasse) over 28 days (Ase), 30 days (CA, Frie, A&TIL) and 45 days (Djøf) to 60 days (MA). Shorter waiting period costs more.
6. Payment period
3-12 months per period of unemployment; several have a total ceiling of 36 months.
7. Exclusions
Own termination is never covered. Time-limited contracts, termination contracts and known illness on purchase are often excluded. Few cover incapacity for work (Lederne, Business Danmark, Det Faglige Hus).
8. Tax
The premium is tax-deductible (tax deduction value approximately 26%). Payments are taxed as A-income, but without the labour market contribution.
